About Us

The Al West Mural, part of Cuba, Missouri’s Viva Cuba mural program, honors George Alva “Al” West Sr., a longtime mayor whose vision helped shape the modern city. Serving from 1946 to 1958, West guided Cuba through a period of major growth and transformation, earning him the title “Father of Modern Cuba.”

When West took office, much of the town’s infrastructure was still undeveloped, with only a few paved streets. One of his most impactful decisions was completing the city’s purchase of its electric utility system—a move that was controversial at the time but ultimately became a key source of revenue. That decision helped fund major improvements, including paved and lighted streets, expanded water and sewer systems, new public facilities, and economic development that brought jobs to the area.

The mural reflects both West’s public leadership and his personal side, incorporating imagery of the era and his connection to local business and community life along Route 66. Commissioned by the West family, it stands as a tribute to a leader whose foresight and dedication laid the groundwork for Cuba’s long-term stability and growth.

Painted by the Whitesitt Group, the mural captures a pivotal time in the town’s history—when post-war momentum and strong local leadership helped move Cuba forward into the modern era.
