About Us

The Amelia Earhart Mural, part of Cuba, Missouri’s Viva Cuba mural program, tells the story of an unexpected moment in aviation history that briefly connected one of the world’s most famous pilots with this small Route 66 town. On September 4, 1928, Earhart was flying her Avro Avian aircraft from Illinois toward the West Coast when she was forced to make an unscheduled landing near Cuba. Fortunately, no major damage occurred, and she was able to continue her journey shortly after.

The mural captures this lesser-known stop in her early career, just as she was gaining national attention for becoming the first woman passenger to cross the Atlantic. In the years that followed, Earhart would go on to become one of aviation’s most celebrated pioneers, setting records and inspiring generations before her disappearance in 1937 during an attempt to fly around the world.

Painted by local artist Shelly Smith Steiger with assistance from Julie Balogh Brand, the mural blends local history with global significance—marking the moment when the path of a pioneering aviator briefly crossed with Cuba, Missouri.
