About Us
The Civil War Murals in Cuba, Missouri are a multi-panel series that tell the story of General Sterling Price’s 1864 campaign and the movement of Union forces under General Thomas Ewing during the Battle of Pilot Knob and its aftermath. The murals capture key moments, including the defense and destruction of Fort Davidson, Union troops retreating through the region, the crossing of the Huzzah River under fire, and the destruction of rail lines and infrastructure in Cuba to prevent escape.
Additional panels depict the burning of depots, the disruption of transportation routes, and the eventual rescue of Union forces near Leasburg. Together, the series illustrates how this campaign brought the Civil War directly through the Cuba area and surrounding communities.
Painted by artist Don Gray as part of the Viva Cuba mural program, the project was developed in collaboration with a local Eagle Scout effort, blending historical research with detailed visual storytelling. The murals provide a vivid look at a lesser-known chapter of the Civil War and its impact on this part of Missouri.
