About Us
The Meeting in Missouri Mural, part of Cuba, Missouri’s Viva Cuba mural program, portrays an early encounter between the Osage Nation and French settlers led by Auguste and Jean Pierre Chouteau. Created by Osage artist Norman Akers, the mural blends tribal history, cultural symbolism, and regional landscape to tell a deeper story about the people and forces that shaped early Missouri.
The artwork highlights elements of Osage life, including traditional dwellings known as wickiups, constructed from saplings and covered with animal skins or canvas. It also reflects the importance of the fur trade, which connected the Osage and French traders and played a major role in the economic development of the region.
Akers incorporates visual motifs inspired by Osage ribbon work and oral traditions, creating a layered piece that goes beyond a single moment to represent a broader cultural exchange. By bringing together Native American and European perspectives, the mural offers a meaningful look at the complex relationships that helped define Missouri’s early history along what would later become the Route 66 corridor.
