About Us
Step back in time and experience one of the most iconic original buildings on Historic Route 66. Originally opened as **The Blue Mill** in **1929** along what was then Route 4 (later Route 66), The Mill quickly became a beloved roadside restaurant known for its distinctive Dutch-inspired architecture, illuminated windmill, and warm hospitality.
Over the decades, The Mill became famous as the **"Home of the Schnitzel,"** serving generations of travelers one of Route 66's most memorable meals. Although the restaurant closed in 1996, a passionate community effort helped save this historic landmark from demolition, preserving an important piece of Mother Road history for future generations.
Today, The Mill Museum proudly showcases memorabilia and exhibits celebrating The Mill Restaurant, The Pig Hip, The Tropics, and other legendary Logan County Route 66 destinations. Whether you're fascinated by roadside architecture, nostalgic diners, or the golden age of American road travel, we invite you to explore the stories that helped shape Route 66 and discover why The Mill remains one of Illinois' most treasured roadside landmarks.
