Old Cuba City Jail

About Us

The Cuba City Jail, built in 1908, is a compact but well-preserved piece of local history located in Cuba, Missouri. Constructed from concrete block, the one-story structure was designed with a front guard room—complete with a desk and wood-burning stove—and a rear cell area featuring iron bars and hanging bunk beds for inmates.

The jail remained in use until 1954, when a newer facility was built, marking the end of its active role in law enforcement. Today, it stands as a small museum, giving visitors a firsthand look at what incarceration looked like in a rural community during the early 20th century.

Carefully restored between 2004 and 2006 as part of an Eagle Scout project, the building retains many of its original features, including the iron door separating the guard space from the cell room. Even the name “Cuba Jail” carved above the entrance remains visible—a simple but unmistakable detail that leaves no doubt about the building’s purpose.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, the Cuba City Jail offers a unique and authentic stop for those interested in the everyday history that shaped life along Route 66.
