About Us

The historic Route 66 Steak ’n Shake in Springfield is more than just a place to grab a steakburger and shake—it's one of the most recognizable surviving roadside restaurants from the golden age of the Mother Road. Located at 1158 East St. Louis Street on the original alignment of Route 66, the restaurant was built in 1962 and remains one of the few remaining examples of Steak ’n Shake's classic mid-century design. Its distinctive glazed-tile exterior, iconic roadside sign, and traditional curb-service layout helped earn it a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

Today, visitors can still experience much of the atmosphere that Route 66 travelers enjoyed more than sixty years ago. The restaurant continues operating as Steak ’n Shake, serving the chain's signature steakburgers and hand-dipped milkshakes while preserving an important piece of roadside Americana. As Springfield is widely recognized as the birthplace of the name "Route 66," this location has become a popular stop for road trippers, photographers, and history enthusiasts looking to experience an authentic piece of the highway's heyday.

For many Route 66 travelers, the restaurant represents a living connection to an era when neon signs, drive-ins, and family road trips defined the American travel experience. Unlike many historic roadside landmarks that have disappeared, Springfield's Route 66 Steak ’n Shake continues to serve customers while preserving the look and feel of a classic Route 66 diner.
