About Us
Schermerhorn Park is one of Southeast Kansas’ most unique natural destinations, offering a mix of scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and rich local history just outside of Galena along historic Route 66.
The park traces its roots back to 1922, when local businessman Edgar Schermerhorn donated land along Shoal Creek to the city of Galena to create a public park for the community.
Over the decades, the area has grown into a beloved gathering place where visitors can experience the natural side of Route 66.
Today, the park features walking trails, picnic areas, and access to Shoal Creek, a clear-running stream that has shaped the landscape of the region. At its center is Schermerhorn Cave, a striking limestone cave known for its unique geology and diverse ecosystem, making it one of the most biologically significant caves in Kansas.
The park is also home to the Southeast Kansas Nature Center, where exhibits and programs highlight the wildlife, plant life, and natural history of the surrounding Ozark region.
Whether you are exploring the trails, visiting the cave, or simply enjoying the peaceful setting, Schermerhorn Park offers a refreshing and memorable stop that showcases a different side of the Route 66 experience.
