About Us
The Fanning Outpost General Store carries on the legacy of the original Fanning General Store, which opened in 1930 and served as a vital hub for both locals and Route 66 travelers for over four decades. After the original store closed in 1972 and was eventually lost, the site remained quiet until a modern revival took shape nearby.
Reopened in the 2000s, the Outpost was designed to bring travelers back to this stretch of the Mother Road. Its most recognizable feature, the World’s Largest Rocking Chair, was added in 2008 as a bold roadside attraction to capture attention and create a reason to stop.
Today, the Outpost blends old and new Route 66, offering souvenirs, snacks, and a place to pause, while continuing the long tradition of welcoming travelers passing through Fanning.
